Match Fixing Proofs

  • Transcript of Conversation among Salim Malik, Basit and Rashid
This conversation was recorded on March 7th, 1995, when Saleem Malik was facing suspension for one week. Saleem Malik revealed many important facts. But in 1998 Saleem Malik denied having any knowledge of match fixing. Following transcript clearly shows that his claim was unfounded and he emphasized the need for a unanimous answer from all players.

Rashid:

They have asked for a written statement. But we will not submit it in writing.

Malik:

What?

Rashid:

They (PCB) were asking what had happened on the tour. I told them about toss controversy.

Malik:

Yes.

Rashid:

Everyone knows about it.

Malik:

Yes.

Rashid:

I have already talked to you, but they were asking for a written statement on bribery...... They (PCB) are pressurizing us for a written statement. We have informed verbally that all was not well in the team and there were many conflicts within the teammates.

Malik:

Yes.

Rashid:

We then announced our retirement.

Malik:

That's right.

Rashid:

We told that Skipper (Intikhab Alam) and Saleem Bhai both knew about it. What did
 they (PCB) ask you?

Malik:

Nothing in particular, they just asked about the bribery issue.

Rashid:

Yes, Yes ......

Malik:

They have just asked for the reply to be submitted within seven days (regarding allegations made by Shane Warne).

Rashid:

Fine.

Malik:

They have asked for a detailed point wise reply against Australian allegations, which have been submitted to the ICC.

Rashid:

What else did they do?

Malik:

What could they have done to me? They never said anything else.

Rashid:

O.K. Now talk to Basit Ali.

Basit:

What happened today Saleem Bhai?

Malik

Nothing in particular. They just asked for written clarification against Shane Warne's
allegations.

Basit:

Have they given something in writing?

Malik:

Yes.

Basit:

The allegations they have made!

Malik:

They (PCB) are saying that the Australians have written to the ICC.

Basit:

What proof they have?

Malik:

They don't have any proof, they are relying on your statements.

Basit:

Let them do whatever they like.

Malik:

O.K.

Basit:

Most probably they will issue show cause notice to us.

Malik:

They have already given me one, I think the Skipper (Intikhab Alam) will be given as well.

Basit:

Saeed will go tomorrow morning ( to meet Javed Burki).

Malik:

Yes Saeed has told me.

Basit:

You should tell him to avoid any outburst.

Malik:

I have told him not to make any foolish comments, they (PCB) are trying to trap him, he will be trapped, he will say one thing and I will say another, all the boys might give different statements, which will only spoil the team's image and he will get stuck.

Basit:

Wasim is here (in Karachi) these days and he is talking about you.

Malik:

Yes!

Basit:

Yes, I have come to know about it.

Malik: No, No he will not do anything foolish. If he will open up then we too…… Everyone will say one thing or the other.
Basit:

Mr. Abbasi has asked us to come over .....
They are trying that we should give a signed statement as a proof against you.

Malik: I think we should sit together and boys should talk……
Basit: You better talk to everyone.
Malik: O.K. fine.
Basit: O.K. fine bye.
