Match Fixing NewsPCB to suggest life bans on Waugh, Warne in ICC meet
KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will press for imposition of life bans on Mark Waugh and Shane Warne at the Executive Board meeting of the International Cricket Council in Christchurch, New Zealand in January, writes Waheed Khan.
'The News' has learnt from Board sources, that Chairman Khalid Mehmood was busy preparing a strong case for the Board meeting on January 10 and 11 and would be pressing ICC to impose a life ban on the two Australians. "Mehmood's contention is that while none of the Pakistani cricketers have ever admitted to having links with bookmakers neither has been anything proved against them so far, Mark Waugh and Warne have themselves admitted taking money from a Indian bookmaker," said one well placed source. According to him, the PCB chief is not all convinced that Waugh and Warne had been paid for giving out information on the weather and pitch conditions to the Indian bookmaker and in fact was preparing a strong case in this connection. "Mehmood will plead for a life ban on the two players in order for the ICC to set a example for the other players," added the source. The ICC Executive Board in which only the Chairman of the cricket boards are invited, will be discussing in detail the match-fixing and betting issue in international cricket and indications are the world governing body of the game will be taking stringent decisions this time to discourage this menace. The findings of the Justice Qayyum Judicial Commission inquiry into allegations of match-fixing and betting against some Pakistan players is also expected to be discussed at the meeting.
